Hi. I am using Windows XP SP3 & IE6 and am happy with each except for one thing. Sometimes I click on a hyperlink (??) to go to a different page within the site or to a new page on a new site and sometimes [a] nothing happens [b] the link works but I receive an error message of some kind or [c] the message "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site http://aumah.net/. Operation Aborted. Then I click OK & I get "The Page Cannot Be Displayed". Why is this happening and can someone help me fix it? Thank you. Carl.

Welcome to AumHa Forums, Carl.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Is Automatic Updates enabled and is the computer fully-patched at Windows Update, as far as you know?

Can you open IE to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, select the CUSTOM option & scan for updates? Are any critical security updates offered? If so, can you install them?

:hand: Do NOT install IE7 or IE8! If either are listed, "hide" it for now, please.

Thank you for your reply. It took some time but here is the information you requested.

AVG Free version 8.5.423
Ad-Aware 8.0.8
Each is current and updated properly. Also the ISP provides security via the cable service.

Firewall
ZoneAlarm version:8.0.298.000
TrueVector version:8.0.298.000
Driver version:8.0.298.000

Search showed 56 files found for IE7; How do I hide them?
Search showed 1 file for IE8 on AumHa forums.

Auto updates is automatic and up to date.

The Norton and Mcafee came with the Acronis True Value 10 software I bought just last week.

Norton_ antivirus.xml C:\Program files\common files\Acronis\BackupScripts

Norton_firewall_2007.xml C:\Program files\common files\Acronis\BackupScripts

Norton_internet security.xml C:\Program files\common files\Acronis\BackupScripts

Mcafee.xml C:\Program files\common files\Acronis\BackupScripts

I will wait for a reply. Thank you. Carl

Huh? Are you referring to the results of a CUSTOM scan at Windows Update?

Are you running IE6 or IE7? (You said IE6 before but I'd like you to doublecheck, please.)

Sorry, but I don't understand the above either.

Has Norton Internet Security (or any other Norton application; e.g., Norton AntiVirus) or a McAfee application (e.g., McAfee Security Center; McAfee VirusScan) ever been installed on the computer-in-question? This would include a free-trial version that came preinstalled on the computer when you bought it and any other free-trial version that you chose to install before you installed AVG v8.5.

If you don't know for sure, that's OK, just tell me.

The CUSTOM scan at Windows Update shows "No high-priority updates for your computer are available".
The 56 files found for IE7 & one for IE8 (files on the PC) was discovered via a search from the start program.
Yes I have IE6 installed-version:6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435CO
I do not know if any Norton or McAfee product has ever been installed before, however I have not installed either Norton nor McAfee on the system as I do not like them.
I hope this is the proper info you require. Thank you. Carl

Thanks for the clarification.

"Sometimes," most of the time, or all of the time?

Can you give us some example web-pages where clicking on the links result in the behavior you describe, please?

If you open a separate browse window to http://aumha.net/index.php, you'll find many clickable links to test.

I will try to explain the situation. While waiting impatiently for your reply I deleted the Norton and McAfee files the were in the Acronis folder as I do not want them on the PC in any form. Next; I opened a new browser window and copied the link you provided into the address bar, & got this "Sorry, we couldn't find http://index.php/. Here are some related websites:" Next I clicked the link and got the Board index. I tried several links (20 to 25) every one of them worked fine. I went to several different sites trying several different links and they all worked fine. Then I went to the NOAA site that has given me problems on occasion & tried it. It worked alright, however a little slow loading. A new question for you. Could it be that one of or both of the Norton & Mcafee files was the cause of the situation, but i don't think so as this has been happening for a few weeks now. Whatever, it seems to have been cleaned up for now. What do you suggest? Carl.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

If you encounter the behavior again and on a regular basis, we might try downloading/running the Norton and McAfee removal tools, just in case one or both were installed at some point in the past. But for now, leave well enough alone.
